Vagmi Nada Ver1.3: A software tool for students of music

Vagmi Nada Ver.1.3 is a user friendly software tool that can be installed on any standard PC with operating system XP or Windows 7. This software tool assists in learning the basics of vocal music for beginners. It is not a substitue for a personal teacher.

Vagmi nada may also prove to be useful for students leraning instrumental music such as flute or violin. Vagmi Nada is undergoing testing with instrumental music at present.

Why Vagmi Nada?
Vagmi Nada saves the learning time of a student by giving a visual feedback. It assists a student to learn the important aspects of music such as swara suddhi, swara jnana, tala jnana etc.
Swara suddhi: A basic requirement in vocal music is that the student has to get the right shruti of the swaras. A teacher states if the sung swara is of correct shruti or if it is apa-shruti. One major issue faced by a beginner is "How to correct apa-shruti?"
Swara Jnana: A student must have the ability to recognize a swara on hearing it.
Tala Jnana: A student must have good sense of timing control.

Vagmi Nada Voice Therapy is yet another software tool which is very useful for students learning vocal music desirous of improving their voice quality control.

  • A singer may not be using the optimum pitch (aadhara shadja) appropriate for his/her voice instrument. This may result in tiredness after prolonged use, inability to reach tara sthayi swaras etc. Optimum pitch is an empirically established concept in voice therapy claimed to alleviate many of these problems. Vagmi Nada Voice Therapy program measures the optimum pitch.
  • Other finer nuances related to a musical voice are: good breath support to be able to sustain a note for a long time, steadiness in voice, good control over intensity etc. Vagmi Nada Voice Therapy helps in measuring and assisting in improving the control.

    • Scale User can select the scale assigned to the swaras: (i) Equi-tempremental (ii) Just Intonation (Da2=27/16) (iii) Just Intonation (Da2=5/3).
    • Swara one at a time - Bar graph: Select Shruti; Select Swara; Use one the tolerance options for pitch: 'Very Easy', 'Easy' 'Hard' in order to learn in a graded manner. Initially select 'Very Easy' option. A bar graph is shown depicting the position of the swara to be achieved in relation to the scale. Initially practice while listening to shruti or the swara to be achieved. A vertical line whose position depends on the pitch of the swara sung or played is shown against the bar graph.
